A lorry attendant watched helplessly as his elder brother, who was the driver, was burnt to death when the lorry they were in burst into flames after crashing into the rear of a trailer at Km243.6 of the North-South Expressway near the Pedas toll plaza today.
Mohd Karim Machap, 31, from Muar, Johor was heading south from Kuala Lumpur when the incident occurred at 2.30am.
'I managed to get out of the lorry, while my brother was pinned to the seat, said the victim's brother, Husin, 23.
I shouted for help and with other motorists, I tried to pull my brother out of the wreckage. However, our attempts were futile as within minutes, the lorry was engulfed in flames.
Husin said they were transporting car spare parts to Segamat in Johor.
'The fire started from the engine compartment and there was nothing I could do except watch,' he said when met at the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the trailer lorry Mizan Kasim, 38, said he was shocked when he heard a loud thump that shook his vehicle.
'I stopped the trailer and went to check what had happened before realising that the driver of the lorry was pinned in his seat and a fire had started front the front of the vehicle.
'I tried to help the victim but was unable to get him out in time,' he said.
The victim was burnt to death before firemen arrived at the scene minutes later.

ORTLAND, Maine -- State Police have charged a truck driver with hauling an insecure load after an aerial lift he was hauling on a flatbed trailer tipped over on the Eastern Prom in Portland Thursday morning.
Police said Bradley Robinson, 31, of Windham, was driving a dump truck that was towing a flatbed trailer with the lift on it when he tried to turn from the Eastern Prom onto Congress Street. As Robinson made the turn, the trailer and lift flipped over, according to police.
Police also cited Robinson for driving a flatbed trailer without any brakes
