road accident which killed hundreds of sheep in the south of NSW is a 'terrible' reminder of the risks of transporting livestock, an animal protection group says.
A semi-trailer overturned on a wet Mulwala-Barooga Road, after leaving the Corowa stockyards, about 6.40pm (AEST) yesterday, resulting in the deaths of about 400 sheep.
The driver of the two-tier transport truck and his young son also were injured in the accident.
'The vehicle veered onto the gravel verge in heavy rain and the driver lost control,' police said today.
'The rig came to rest across the east-bound lanes of the roadway.'
Police said about 300 sheep were killed in the crash, and another 100 animals had to be put down because of their injuries. Just 50 sheep survived
