The Travelers Cos. has a stinging response to the multibillion-dollar crime of cargo theft.
The company has created the 'Travelers Sting Trailer' - a large truck outfitted to spy and gather evidence - to help law enforcement crack down on organized cargo theft rings.
The 53-foot-long, specially equipped tractor-trailer was unveiled Monday at the 2008 Chicago Midwest Cargo Theft Summit, and its first deployment will be in Illinois, at a site unidentified for obvious reasons.
The FBI has estimated U.S. cargo theft at $15 billion to $30 billion a year, but that doesn't include indirect costs such as replacement of stolen goods and higher insurance premiums. Merchandise taken from trucks ranges from cellphones and construction materials to prescription drugs.



A 76-year-old man was taken into custody yesterday after allegedly wielding a shotgun in a Boone County trailer park.
Boone County sheriffs deputies were dispatched at 6:38 p.m. to Woodstock Estates Trailer Park, 3501 New Haven Road, for a report of a man waving a gun at some children in the area, according to a news release from the sheriffs department.
A deputy arrived and saw the suspect unarmed near his residence, the news release said. Homer Richardson, 76, was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility for evaluation, the news release said. Criminal charges are pending, the news release said
